My stays in Abu Dhabi were always an unforgettable experience, where I was able to enjoy the perfect blend of culture, luxury and breathtaking landscapes. I was particularly impressed by the warm hospitality of the locals and the impressive architecture - especially the Qasr Al Watan and the Sheikh Zayed Mosque - which make the city a fascinating place.

Culture and Tradition in Abu Dhabi

As the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi preserves a rich cultural and traditional identity deeply rooted in Arab and Islamic history. The city is renowned for its cultural achievements, including the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque—an architectural masterpiece with both religious and cultural significance.

Traditional values such as hospitality, family unity, and respect for elders play a central role in daily life and are also palpable for visitors. At the same time, Abu Dhabi seamlessly blends modern elements with traditional practices, reflected in its architecture, vibrant art scene, and numerous cultural events.

Dress Code – How to Dress Appropriately?

In Abu Dhabi, the dress code reflects respect for local culture and Islamic traditions. Public places require modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Women should avoid revealing outfits and are advised to wear long sleeves and long pants or skirts. When visiting religious sites such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, women must wear an abaya and cover their hair with a scarf.

Men should also dress respectfully in public, preferably wearing long trousers and shirts with sleeves. During the summer months, lightweight and breathable clothing is recommended, as long as it adheres to the dress code. In shopping malls, hotels, and restaurants, the dress code is generally more relaxed.

The Origins of the Emirates

The roots of the Emiratis in Abu Dhabi trace back deep into the history of the Arabian Peninsula. The native population primarily consists of Bedouin tribes, who traditionally lived as nomads in the vast desert landscapes. In 1761, the Bani Yas tribe discovered a freshwater source on Abu Dhabi Island, leading to permanent settlement and the construction of a fort. This water source enabled the establishment of a community that gradually evolved into an important trade and fishing hub.

In the 20th century, the discovery of oil sparked an unprecedented economic boom and rapid modernization of Abu Dhabi. Despite this fast-paced development and urbanization, the Emiratis have preserved their cultural heritage and traditional values, which remain deeply embedded in society today.

Regions and Landscapes

The city of Abu Dhabi itself is located on an island, connected to the mainland by bridges. The coastal regions are famous for their many natural and artificial islands, including Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, known for their leisure, cultural, and tourism attractions.

The western regions are dominated by vast desert landscapes, including the Rub' al Khali, or the "Empty Quarter"—one of the largest sand deserts in the world. Oases like the Liwa Oasis provide a lush contrast to the arid desert, renowned for their date palm plantations and historic irrigation systems.
