Good to Know Dubai

Metropolis of Superlatives

The eponymous capital of the Emirate of Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates. A decades-long construction boom has made Dubai a city of superlatives: here you will find not only the world's largest number of skyscrapers over 300 meters tall but also the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa at 828 meters. Yet in many other areas, Dubai regularly sets new records. Be it the best restaurants, spectacular hotels, or the largest water park – Dubai enchants its visitors with higher, larger, more modern, and more extravagant attractions.

Culture and Tradition in Dubai

Dubai has a rich and diverse culture that is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions while being shaped by a strong international presence. The traditional aspects of life in Dubai are reflected in the architecture, clothing, and festivities. Islamic holidays, such as Ramadan and Eid, play a central role in social and religious life. At the same time, Dubai, with its multicultural population, is a melting pot of different cultures, which is reflected in the diversity of cuisine, the art scene, and events. Modern skyscrapers stand beside historic souks and museums that preserve the heritage of the Bedouins and the trading history of the region. The city is known for its hospitality and luxury, making it a fascinating place where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously.

Regions and Landscapes

Dubai, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is located on the southeastern coast of the Persian Gulf and borders Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The city offers an impressive variety of landscapes – from coastlines and artificial islands like the Palm Islands and the World Islands project to vast deserts inland, ideal for activities such as desert safaris and sandboarding. Dubai Creek divides the city into the historic neighborhoods of Deira and Bur Dubai, while modern districts with futuristic skyscrapers, luxurious marinas, and the famous Palm Island Jumeirah create a diverse urban backdrop. Dubai's landscapes offer a fascinating blend of nature and human creativity.

Best Time to Travel

The best time to visit Dubai is from October to March. During these months, the temperatures are pleasant and mild, making them ideal for sightseeing, beach visits, and outdoor activities. Daytime temperatures usually range between 25°C and 30°C during this time and are predominantly dry. Many events and festivals take place, including the Dubai Shopping Festival and the Dubai Food Festival. Temperatures rise significantly from April onward, especially from July to September, where they can often reach 40°C or more. Many travelers prefer indoor activities during this time, such as visiting shopping malls and indoor theme parks or water parks. Many hotels and resorts offer special summer deals and additional services during this time, making Dubai an attractive travel destination year-round.

History and Politics

Dubai grew from a small fishing and pearl diving settlement to a global metropolis. Already in the 18th century, Bedouin tribes settled here, surviving through trade and hospitality. Modern history began in 1833 when Sheikh Maktoum bin Butti Al Maktoum founded Dubai at Dubai Creek with the Bani Yas tribe, a significant trading port. Since the founding of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 1971, Dubai has been part of this federal state and is still governed by the Al Maktoum family. Under Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai has developed into a center for trade, innovation, and luxury, attracting international attention and preserving its cultural roots and traditions despite rapid growth and modernization.
