Necessary travel documents: Travel prepared for Egypt

To ensure your trip to Egypt is relaxed and smooth, you should have all necessary travel documents fully prepared and on hand before departure. Depending on the type of travel and itinerary, the exact requirements can vary slightly – a careful check is therefore essential. Below you will find out which documents you need and how to keep them safe.

Passport and visa

For entry into Egypt, German citizens need a passport that is valid for at least six months upon arrival. Children also require their own child passport with a photo. Temporary passports are accepted, but may cause issues with certain airlines or transit countries – be sure to check this in advance.

A visa is also required for tourist stays. It can be conveniently applied for as an e-visa online – ideally at least seven days before travel. Alternatively, a visa on arrival is available directly at the airport (currently 25 USD for a single entry, 60 USD for multiple entries). If you prefer to play it safe, you can also apply for the visa at one of the Egyptian embassies or consulates in Germany.

Entry with an identity card is theoretically possible, but not advisable everywhere: Not all Egyptian authorities accept this ID, and an additional entry card along with two biometric passport photos is required. Temporary identity cards are not sufficient.

Other important documents

In addition to your passport and visa, you should also include other documents on your packing list. While international health insurance is not required, it is highly recommended – especially for activities such as diving or desert tours. Proof of insurance can also be helpful in medical emergencies.

Copies of your important documents – such as your passport, visa, and vaccination card if applicable – should be carried both in physical form and digitally. Encrypted cloud storage or USB drives, as well as offline copies on your smartphone, have proven to be effective. In case of loss, this allows for a quick replacement.

If you are traveling with children who are not accompanied by both parents, you will need a consent letter as well as a copy of the birth certificate and the passports of the guardians. Also useful: two biometric passport photos (for visas or entry cards), sufficient cash in USD or Euros, and a carefully maintained inventory of your documents – including numbers and issue dates.

One last tip: Always keep your most important documents on your person during your journey – ideally in a secure travel wallet with RFID protection. Store them safely in the hotel safe while you are there. This way, you are prepared for all eventualities and can start your trip to Egypt with peace of mind.

Clothing for cultural sites

Visiting Egypt's cultural highlights such as the Pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor, or the vibrant markets of Cairo is often a highlight for many travelers. To be both comfortable and respectfully dressed, it is worth taking a close look at the local customs. Those who prepare well show appreciation for the local culture – and remain comfortable in high temperatures.

Clothing for religious sites

Strict dress codes apply when visiting mosques and other religious places. Women should cover their shoulders, arms, and legs and ideally bring a light scarf or shawl to cover their heads – this is mandatory in many mosques. Men should avoid shorts and sleeveless shirts, opting instead for long pants and shirts with sleeves. Discreet, loose clothing in muted colors is respectful and practical in the hot climate.

Everyday clothing for city trips

For sightseeing tours through cities like Cairo, Luxor, or Aswan, appropriate attire is also recommended. Ideally, long, airy pants or maxi skirts combined with loose tops that cover the shoulders and upper arms are suitable. Breathable fabrics like cotton or linen offer high comfort, even on hot days. Comfortable closed shoes should be chosen for long walks and uneven terrain. A sun hat, sunglasses, and a scarf should also be included in your daypack – not only for protection from the sun but also for spontaneous visits to religious sites.

With the right clothing, you not only show cultural sensitivity but also ensure that your explorations of Egypt's history are enjoyable and relaxed.

Adventurous activities: Clothing and equipment

Egypt is not only a land of pyramids but also a true paradise for adventurers. Whether riding a camel through the desert, sandboarding over dunes, or snorkeling among colorful corals – each of these experiences has its own requirements for clothing and equipment. Prepared travelers can enjoy adventures to the fullest – safely, comfortably, and appropriately for the weather.

Desert tours

The Egyptian desert landscapes – whether it's the White, the Black, or the Sinai desert – lure with endless expanses and spectacular natural scenery. For jeep safaris, quad tours, or camel rides, you need robust, breathable clothing: long, lightweight pants and shirts protect against the sun and sand, while a fleece pullover or windbreaker keeps you warm in the cool evenings. Sturdy, closed hiking shoes with grip, a cloth or Bedouin scarf against swirling sand, and good sunglasses with UV protection are indispensable.

A daypack is also essential – filled with a large water bottle (ideally insulated), snacks, a first aid kit, and high SPF sunscreen. If you plan to spend the night in the desert, consider a lightweight sleeping bag (suitable for nighttime temperatures below 5°C), a sleeping pad, a flashlight or headlamp, and a mosquito net. For particularly hot days, cooling cloths, electrolyte solutions, and aqua socks against hot sand are advisable.

Diving equipment for the Red Sea

The Red Sea is one of the most beautiful diving and snorkeling spots in the world – with corals, turtles, and colorful schools of fish. If you want to explore the underwater world in Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, or Marsa Alam, you should pack appropriate swimwear and diving gear. In addition to a swimsuit or swim shorts, include a large towel, high SPF sunscreen, a waterproof lip balm, and if possible, your own snorkeling equipment – especially a mask and snorkel, as rental equipment often does not fit well.

For particularly active water lovers, a waterproof bag or dry bag for valuables and electronics, an action camera for underwater shots, and aqua socks to protect your feet from sharp reefs or hot sand are recommended. If you’re relaxing between dives, a sarong, a light cover-up, and trekking sandals are ideal.

Whether in the desert or water: With the right equipment, your Egypt adventure will be an unforgettable experience – and your luggage the best travel companion.

Hygiene and care: Well taken care of despite sun, sand, and heat

Egypt is a fascinating travel destination – but the intense sun rays, high temperatures, and sometimes unfamiliar infrastructure place special demands on your hygiene and care products. Prepared travelers not only protect their health but also ensure more comfort and well-being throughout the trip.

Essential hygiene products

A must for any trip to Egypt are disinfectant sprays or wipes, as public toilets or rest stops may not always be hygienic. Wet wipes and a small roll of toilet paper should also be packed. In addition to personal basics like toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant, it’s advisable to stick to well-known brands – not all products are available on-site at the usual quality. Women are advised to bring plenty of menstrual products like tampons or menstrual cups, as these can be hard to find. Condoms should also be brought from home if needed.

High sunscreen is indispensable: Sunscreen with at least SPF 30, preferably 50, reliably protects your skin, as does a lip balm with SPF. After a long day in the sun, a cooling after-sun lotion provides relief. Don’t forget insect repellent (ideally with DEET or Icaridin) and a soothing cream for stings. For any unexpected issues, a small travel pharmacy should also be included – containing medications for diarrhea, pain relief, electrolytes, and personal medications.

Tips for skin care in hot climates

The Egyptian sun is merciless – therefore, skin protection begins in the morning. Apply enough sunscreen and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. A head covering and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing provide additional protection. In the evenings, it’s essential to thoroughly cleanse the skin from sweat, sand, and sunscreen residues. Use gentle cleansing products and opt for light, moisturizing care – ideally in the form of cooling gels or serums that won’t weigh the skin down.

After-sun products or aloe vera gel help soothe sun-stressed skin. A gentle scrub once or twice a week supports the skin’s appearance and prevents irritations. Drinking plenty – ideally water – is a must in the heat and additionally ensures hydrated, healthy skin. Paying attention to airy clothing made of cotton and a vitamin-rich diet creates ideal conditions for a well-cared-for skin feeling – even under the Egyptian sun.

Electronics and technical gadgets: Well-equipped for Egypt

Whether strolling through the streets of Cairo, camping in the desert, or snorkeling in the Red Sea – the right technical gear makes your travel not only more comfortable but also safer and more varied. In Egypt, where modern infrastructure and remote terrain often lie closely together, being well-prepared is worthwhile. With the right devices, you remain flexible, reliably reach your goals, and effortlessly capture unforgettable moments. From smartphones and cameras to power banks and flashlights.

Practical travel electronics

Whether for orientation in Cairo, memory photos of ancient temples, or entertainment on long bus rides – the right technology can significantly enhance your trip to Egypt. A smartphone is indispensable: It serves not only for communication but also as a camera, navigation aid, and emergency companion. Supplement it with a power bank so you don’t run out of battery on the go – particularly useful for long trips or in remote areas.

A good camera or action camera is also worth having, especially for impressive shots underwater or in the desert. Additional memory cards ensure you don’t run out of space for photos and videos. Headphones, an e-book reader, or tablet add variety during travels, and a pocket or headlamp is ideal for desert camps or potential power outages. If you carry multiple devices, a small USB charger or a compact power strip is advisable – keeping all batteries ready for use.

Electronics and adapter requirements

The good news is: In Egypt, you usually don’t need a special adapter. The common plug types C and F are compatible with European devices, so you can use your familiar chargers without any issues. The voltage of 220 volts at 50 Hertz largely corresponds to the standards in Germany. The only important thing is that your devices are designed for 220–240 volts – which is typically the case for modern smartphones, laptops, or cameras. For extra safety, you can still bring a compact USB multi-adapter – especially practical when charging multiple devices simultaneously.

Provision and snacks on the go

Even on short excursions in Egypt, being well-prepared is worthwhile – especially when high temperatures and long drives are on the agenda. With the right snacks and a secure fluid supply, you remain productive, relaxed, and healthy on the move.

Food for excursions

For tours to temples, oases, or desert landscapes, a selection of snacks that are light, compact, and above all heat-resistant is advisable. Energy bars and granola bars provide quick energy and take up little space. Dried fruits and nuts are also ideal – they are nutritious, withstand high temperatures, and are quickly accessible. Salty snacks like crackers or pretzel sticks can also be a sensible addition to replenish lost salt in the heat. If you prefer to have something fresh, you can pack a small lunch box with bread, cheese, or vegetables – preferably in an insulated cooler bag.

Also pay attention to practical packaging: Reusable containers or zip bags keep snacks fresh and clean. Hygiene products like wet wipes or hand sanitizer should also not be lacking, to easily clean hands while on the go.

Drinking water and fluid supply

The most important rule: Never drink tap water in Egypt – not even for brushing your teeth. Only use bottled, sealed water and fill it into a sturdy, reusable water bottle. Bottles with an integrated filter are particularly practical, offering extra safety if access to bottled water is limited.

It is also advisable to avoid ice cubes, as these often come from tap water. If you sweat heavily on excursions, also take electrolyte powder or isotonic drinks to balance out the mineral levels. And don’t forget: Regular handwashing or disinfecting – especially before eating – is a must in Egypt.

With the right planning, you’ll be well-prepared – and can enjoy your excursions in peace.

Optimal luggage solution: Suitcase or backpack – and how to pack smart

Types of luggage

If you are traveling to Egypt, you should choose your luggage not only by style but especially by destination, travel duration, and planned activities. A classic suitcase is ideal for cultural or beach vacations with fixed hotel accommodations. It offers plenty of storage space, protects delicate items, and helps keep things organized – especially if you are traveling by plane, bus, or taxi and rarely have to carry your luggage yourself.

For adventurous types or individual travelers who frequently change locations, a travel backpack is usually the better choice. It is more flexible, easier to transport – particularly in uneven terrain or on desert tours – and offers more freedom of movement. A practical combination is a large main piece of luggage (suitcase or backpack) along with a small daypack for excursions or flights.

Organization of luggage

Regardless of the chosen luggage type, a thoughtful packing strategy provides clarity and reduces stress on the go. Packing cubes are useful for sorting clothes and items by category and storing them space-efficiently. The rolling technique instead of classic folding saves space and prevents wrinkles – especially with airy summer clothing.

Net bags for dirty laundry, dry bags for electronics, or vacuum bags for bulky items like jackets also help to utilize luggage volume optimally. With color-coded or labeled bags, you always stay organized – even in hectic moments or during spontaneous hotel changes. This makes packing (and unpacking) on the go almost a pleasure.
