El Gouna – Swimming after the Nile cruise
The bathing part of the Nile route – lagoons and houses
The bathing part of the Nile route – lagoons and houses
On the coast of the Red Sea, 25 kilometers north of the city of Hurghada, lies El Gouna – a planned place, construction of which began in 1989. Lagoons, canals, and islands connected by bridges form its layout. The name of the place stands for a lagoon landscape, not for an old town. Those who want to combine a Nile cruise with swimming in El Gouna will find here the bathing part of a combination and no separate beach holiday market.
In both published trips, El Gouna is at the end of the route: One leads the place as stage 5 and as an optional extension at the Red Sea, the other as a regular final stage. For a trip through Egypt , this means: The bathing part comes after the sites, not before. The number of nights varies, and the role of the stage also differs.
This page lists three houses in the stock with what their operators declare themselves: The Chedi El Gouna, La Maison Bleue, and Casa Cook El Gouna. Additionally, there are the districts of the place, the diving bases, and a climate series with a designated reference period, and categories and square meters are listed with the houses instead of in an advertising line. Where the sources provide no information, this is expressly stated here.
Best travel time
El Gouna near Hurghada – Arrival and location
The distance to Hurghada has two reference points. The local operator states 25 kilometers to the city of Hurghada and 40 kilometers to the airport, and that is exactly why the numbers differ in the German-speaking network. Both values come from the same source, and the details in this box relate to long-distance connections, including the journey from Luxor , not the routes within the place.
1# Hurghada Airport
40 kilometers according to the operator, without verifiable travel time, 22 kilometers according to one house's factsheet (as of 11.01.2023), 42 kilometers according to the brand page of a third house. Three primary sources, one reference point, none with a survey date.
2# City of Hurghada
25 kilometers according to the operator, without travel time. The airport is located south of the city, El Gouna is north.
3# From Luxor
about four hours by car. This is our own information from the travel itinerary, not a measured travel time.
4# Paths in the place
three TukTuk operators, all named, all with operating hours — Toktok from 7 to 4 o'clock, Solectra from 8 to 1 o'clock, Alternative from 8 to 3 o'clock.
5# Shuttle boat
connects Downtown El Gouna with Zaytouna Island, passing by Sunset Tower, Abu Tig Marina, and New Marina. Tours in German and English. A schedule is not documented.
El Gouna after the Nile cruise
Both published trips end in El Gouna as the last stage: A journey through millennia places the site as stage 5, and the live page literally refers to this stage as an optional extension at the Red Sea. Four nights are listed there, the registered house is The Chedi El Gouna. The extension lies outside the designated travel duration, and those who do not book it will travel the route without the bathing part.
The second trip is called "Pharaoh’s history meets tranquility at the Red Sea". This course presents El Gouna as stage 3 with three nights and the same house, and the nights are included in the designated duration. A cruise stage does not appear in it, the stretch on water is described by the page regarding the Nile cruises , and both trips use the same house.
The monthly strip of this page organizes the months according to the sightseeing season of the round trip, not according to the water, and those who book this combination set the date according to the sites. We disclose this instead of smoothing it out. October has an average of 32.1 degrees as a daily maximum and thus falls to the lowest level of the strip, although the own stock lets the season begin in this month.
For the water temperature, the same climate source provides an older series: The twelve values of this series are thirty-year averages of the completed normal period 1961–1990, so no measurements from today and no forecasts. The highest normal value of the series is 27 degrees, in the months of August and September. The series says nothing about a single day and nothing about the current year, and the table lists the reference period in its header.
| Month | Water temperature, normal value 1961–1990 (°C) |
|---|---|
| January | 21 |
| February | 20 |
| March | 21 |
| April | 22 |
| May | 24 |
| June | 25 |
| July | 26 |
| August | 27 |
| September | 27 |
| October | 26 |
| November | 24 |
| December | 23 |
For the more recent normal period 1991–2020, the same source provides no water temperature at all, and the air temperatures of this page come from the more recent series, the water values exclusively from the older one. No sentence on this page reconciles the values of one series with those of the other. The four months with the highest normal value of the water series are all at the lowest level in the monthly strip.
El Gouna – Districts and Attractions
El Gouna is not a grown city, but a planned one: Samih Sawiris had the place established from 1989, and the local operator describes the construction in its own voice as a commenced project. Besides the hotels, the same operator engages in property sales, resale, rental, designated residential areas, and binding community regulations. This is the verifiable answer to the question of who actually lives here.
Only one source mentions a magnitude: The factsheet of one of the three houses describes El Gouna as a city with over 25,000 inhabitants on a 10-kilometer long stretch of beach as of January 2023. Both numbers come from this one document, and without a date and attribution, they do not stand here. We have not found an independent confirmation for this.
For the paths within the place, the local operator names three TukTuk operators, all three with operating hours, and Toktok operates from 7 a.m. A local shuttle bus is described by the houses on their own pages, while the transportation page of the local operator does not include it. We do not resolve this contradiction, and no operator source provides a schedule for both means of transport.
Downtown and Abu Tig Marina
The districts of the place are listed with names at operator and house sources: Downtown, Abu Tig Marina, New Marina, Zaytouna Island, and Mangroovy, and no source documents travel times between them. The names are verified, not the distances between them. Therefore, no minute indication between two districts is provided on this page.
The shuttle boat connects Downtown El Gouna with Zaytouna Island and passes by Sunset Tower, Abu Tig Marina, and New Marina, and tours are available in German and English. Three kilometers to the marina is stated by one of the three houses for itself. The line course is documented, not a timetable.
Snorkeling and Diving in El Gouna
The local operator operates five diving bases, and all five are listed there by name. They are Orca Dive Club, Dream Team Divers, Scuba World Diving Centre, Blue Brother Divers, and The Dive Connection. The list is available on the diving base page of the local operator, each of the five bases has its own description there, and there are no more than these five.
None of the five descriptions mention an entry point from the shore, and one of them says nothing about access at all. Together, they list day trips, half and full days, including short and day tours, and one of the five mentions Abu Tig Marina as a starting point. Both The Chedi El Gouna and La Maison Bleue describe snorkeling as a boat excursion. This is a statement regarding the verified sources, not about the water itself.
At the beach of The Chedi El Gouna, snorkeling equipment is available. Beach and pools open according to the factsheet of this house from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., as of January 2023. Where one then snorkels with this equipment is not stated in the document, and the equipment is documented, not the place of its use.
The reef in front of El Gouna
Whether El Gouna has a house reef is not claimed by any primary source and also not disproven. A search was conducted in six ways: on the diving base page and activity page of the local operator, on the surrounding page and in the factsheet of a house, on the directory page of a second house, and in two web searches. None of the six avenues produced any results.
Instead, what the five diving bases describe is documented: none of them mentions an entry point from the shore. The most cited answer in the German-speaking network comes from a forum post from 2010 that does not reference a source or a date and therefore remains unverified. We do not adopt it.
Houses on the beach of El Gouna
Three houses represent El Gouna in the stock, and the verifiable dividing line between them is based on age. The Chedi El Gouna explicitly welcomes children and requires a minimum age of 18 for check-in. La Maison Bleue accepts guests from 16 years, Casa Cook El Gouna also according to the operator. Additionally, there are two different magnitudes for the suites.
The fact that this distinction fills a gap is due to the field. Among the 32 pages of the German premium corpus, there is no dedicated local page for El Gouna; the place appears there only as a hotel page. Those searching for The Chedi El Gouna find hotel pages and tour operator pages, but no description of the place, and what is stated here comes from the operators themselves.
Restaurants and Dine Around in El Gouna
Four gastronomic establishments are listed in the factsheet of The Chedi El Gouna, as of January 2023: The Restaurant, The Beach House, Nihon, and The Lounge. Dine Around is a program of the local operator: Those who booked a catering rate in a participating house can eat in the restaurants of other participating houses. Drinks and extras are not included, and the reservation goes through the reception before noon. These are the conditions stated by the local operator.
Three pages in the verified field mention Dine Around, but none explain it. Which houses participate is not clearly stated by the source. The Dine Around page of the local operator contradicts itself; the tile list includes different houses than the FAQs on the same page. Of our three houses, The Chedi El Gouna is listed in both lists, La Maison Bleue in none, and Casa Cook El Gouna only in one, and the source does not provide any more information about participation.
The Chedi El Gouna
The Chedi El Gouna offers 82 rooms and suites in six categories, and the house's own factsheet breaks them down as 66 standard and 16 suites, as of January 2023. This is the only published breakdown for one of the three houses. The calculations do not add up for the other two, and the premium beachfront category is at 35 square meters.
Material instead of adjective: a finely carved ebony door between the sleeping and living areas, bamboo details, a washbasin made of pearl marble. The house is located on a slope, not flat on the beach; the deluxe rooms are situated in a courtyard on the hill. Orascom Hotels Management operates The Chedi El Gouna under a franchise agreement with GHM Hotels. These are statements of the house about itself.
La Maison Bleue by the lagoon
La Maison Bleue offers 13 suites, and the house states this itself. Four suite categories and one villa are published, three of which range from 80 to 120 square meters; the house does not mention a distribution of the thirteen into these categories. A recalculation from the published categories does not yield the number either.
The house stands at a private lagoon, a stone's throw from the Red Sea, and describes itself with colonnades, marble, coffered ceilings, and frescoes; the kitchen is run by a French chef. The same source locates it outside of El Gouna. La Maison Bleue is a member of Relais & Châteaux. Its own page states the house as adults only; the age limit is binding.
Casa Cook El Gouna
Casa Cook El Gouna has thirteen room offerings, twelve of which have size information and views, ranging from 39 to 83 square meters, with the average categories at 42 square meters. Four types of views are available, and only this house offers a mountain view among the three houses. The swim-up suites provide direct access to a shared pool, not to a private one.
Two discrepancies belong to this house: the brand page states one total for the rooms, while the local operator states another, and therefore none is provided here. The brand page had a note at the research date regarding work between two month names without a year indication, and next to it, the local operator has an undated note about temporarily closed rooms. Casa Cook El Gouna calls itself adults only.
Documented and open statements
What we can verify
The house and local information on this page comes from the operator's own pages. The monthly values of the travel time are provided by the weather station at Hurghada Airport, approximately 26 kilometers in a straight line south of the place. There is no station in El Gouna itself, and no official primary source for Egyptian climate normals is accessible through the verified avenues; the distance to the station comes from our own calculation with its coordinates.
Three primary sources state 22, 40, and 42 kilometers for the same route to Hurghada Airport, and none of them has a survey date. All three are statements from operators, two from houses and one from the local operator, and we do not resolve the contradiction; we note it. We do not derive a range and an average from these three values. None of the three tells which value is correct.
Whether there is a house reef in El Gouna is not claimed by any primary source nor disproven, and no operator page provides a schedule for the paths in the place. For Casa Cook El Gouna, there are two primary sources, the brand and the local operator, and both provide differing depths of information at two points, regarding the number of rooms and the age rule. In terms of the age rule, the local operator's page is more precise.
Information researched in September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions about El Gouna
Where is El Gouna located?
On the coast of the Red Sea, north of Hurghada. The operator states 25 kilometers to the city of Hurghada. El Gouna is not a naturally grown town but a lagoon landscape planned since 1989, consisting of canals and islands that are connected by bridges, with Hurghada Airport located south of the city and El Gouna to the north of it.
How far is El Gouna from Hurghada?
It depends on the reference point. According to the operator, it is 25 kilometers to the city; three primary sources state 22, 40, and 42 kilometers to the airport, all three for the same reference point and none with a date of collection. A fourth, widely circulated number does not appear in any of these sources, and we do not create a range or average from it.
Can you go snorkeling in El Gouna?
Yes, specifically as a boat trip: The operator mentions five dive bases by name, including Orca Dive Club, and none of the five descriptions mention an entry from the shore. Both confirmed hotels also describe snorkeling as a boat trip, and snorkeling equipment is available at the beach of one of the hotels. No primary source indicates whether there is a house reef.
What is the best hotel in El Gouna?
We do not name any. Three hotels are in our inventory: The Chedi El Gouna with 82 rooms and suites, La Maison Bleue with thirteen suites and a membership at Relais & Châteaux, Casa Cook El Gouna with thirteen room offerings in four views. One explicitly welcomes children, La Maison Bleue accepts guests from 16 years of age, and Casa Cook El Gouna does the same according to the operator. Stars, ratings, or a ranking are not provided here.
What is Dine Around in El Gouna?
A program by the operator. Those who have booked a meal rate in a participating hotel can dine in the restaurants of other participating hotels; drinks and extras are not included. Which hotels participate is not clearly stated in the source; the tile list and FAQ on the same page list different numbers, and The Chedi El Gouna appears in both lists, while La Maison Bleue appears in none.
